Hey everyone,

We received a request for sources about bias in the media toward police. We will post any links we find here. Feel free to add any sources you have on this subject here as well. Since there has been so much media coverage of the police this year there may be a lot of research on this subject. Don’t be shy!

We found a report from the National Institute of Justice that includes:

“Frequent exposure to media reports of police abuse or corruption is a strong predictor of perceptions of misconduct and supports the belief that it is common. [5] African-Americans who live in high-crime areas and who regularly hear others talk about police misconduct are especially likely to believe misconduct is common.”

It also references two studies done, but they are not open access; however, the librarian at your school may be able to access them for you. Here are the links:

We also found an article from the Washington Times discussing media bias in the coverage of the shooting of Dillon Taylor as compared to other high-profile police shootings that have taken place.

Hope this helps,

Team CRS
